Free the 50 is a pledge to end the incarceration of the 40 to 50 girls and gender-expansive youth currently held in Los Angeles County juvenile halls and camps. These facilities have a documented history of abuse, neglect, and sexual violence. For decades, young people in county custody have been harmed instead of protected. As a result, Los Angeles County has agreed to nearly $5 billion in settlements to survivors — the largest sexual abuse settlement in U.S. history. Yet the same system continues to function largely unchanged. In 2023, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to end the incarceration of girls and gender-expansive youth, but the County has failed to follow through. By signing this pledge, you are demanding that LA County keep its word and bring young people home to safe, community-based care.
