On Monday, after weeks of pressure from elected officialsand uproar from family members and communitysupporters of Banko Brown — a 24-year-old unhoused Black trans man who was killed by a security guard at Walgreens on Market Street in downtown San Francisco, after Brown allegedly tried to steal food — San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins finally released video of Brown’s April 27 shooting.
At a time of tremendous strife and doubt surrounding the city’s future, San Franciscans need to be able to have faith that its criminal justice system can operate fairly and transparently. Instead, anger born of mistrust once again abounds.
So, what does accountability now look like for Banko Brown’s killing?
